1 Hand Wash Your Swimsuit After Every Use.
Never, ever wash your swimsuit in the washing machine. I repeat. Never ever wash your swimsuit in the washing machine! Instead, gently hand wash your suit in the bathroom sink and hang it up in your shower (or on shower door). The reason why the washing machine is a bad idea is because the machine will breakdown the lycra fibers and ruin the bra cups (that are sewn into the swimsuit). Special swimsuit cleaners are available- and highly recommended to ensure the suit lasts all Summer and removes chlorine and salt water. Plain water alone cannot do the job.
2. Never Dry Your Swimsuit in the Sun or in a Dryer.
The sun and the dryer are both hard on the lycra and spandex in your swim suit. The sun will speed fading and both will cause the breakdown of the elastic quality of your swimwear.
3. Change Swimsuits
Try and give your swimsuits at least 24 hours to dry before reusing. The lycra/spandex is a memory yarn. The swimsuit needs 24 hours to go back to its original shape.
4. Be careful where you sit, lay, and lean
Pool sides and many decks are rough so you don't slip. It may not feel rough to the touch but your swimsuit will find it rough. It will run and pick the bottom of your suit or the front (if you're leaning over the edge). Take the extra second to sit or lay on a towel. Your bathing suit will last longer and you'll be happier.
5. Sunbath Before You Swim!
Do your sunbathing before you swim. The combination of sun and chemicals from the water makes your swimsuit wear out quicker. If swimming first is what you prefer change into a dry swimsuit to sunbathe in.
6. Hot Tub Warning!
Hot tubs are extremely hard on swimsuits and will destroy them quickly. The Bromine and extreme heat will fade and stretch your swimsuit faster than anything else. When you're hanging out in the hot tub alone wear an old swimsuit. Be sure to clean it by thoroughly rinsing it so all of the chemicals wash out of your swimsuit. If you're hot tub-bing with a group of friends (and must look your best!) immediately wash your swimsuit as soon as you're out of the hot tub.
The only suits that have a chance of surviving the hot tub are 100% polyester swimsuits or chlorine resistant swimwear.
